The original meaning of the phrase is connected to the 17th century carving over a door of the famous shrine in Japan. It is believed to have incorporated Confucius’s Code of Conduct, using the monkey as a way to depict man’s life cycle. There are different interpretations of the phrase but in Japan the proverb is simply regarded as a Japanese Golden Rule .
Each distinct carved wooden table ornament is available individually or as the three wise monkeys together.
